How to Play VHS – Villains, Heroes and Stories: The New Narrative Format for Disney Lorcana TCG

In the huge and colorful universe of Disney Lorcana, the possibilities for adventure are endless.

But what happens when you add a pinch of extra storytelling, a dash of nostalgia, and a new strategic challenge?

VHS – Villains, Heroes and Stories is born, the original format created by Lore League to rediscover Disney stories in a whole new way.

What is the VHS format?

VHS (acronym for Villains, Heroes and Stories) is an alternative format for Disney Lorcana TCG designed to enhance the game’s narrative aspect, giving space to the worlds, characters, and plots that have always been part of Disney’s magic.

In VHS, each deck revolves around a single Disney Franchise – a movie, a series, a saga, or a short – turning every match into a truly thematic immersion.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to build a deck entirely based on Robin Hood, The Lion King, or Frozen, this is the format for you.

The main rules of the VHS format

The VHS format retains the fundamental rules of Core Constructed but introduces some modifications and guidelines that make the gaming experience more distinctive and narrative.

Let’s take a closer look:

✅ Access to all six inks

Unlike the classic format, VHS has no restrictions on inks.

You can use all six colors, including double-ink cards, without limits.

This allows for complete strategic freedom, provided the cards respect the belonging to the chosen Franchise.

✅ Themed decks by Franchise

Each VHS deck must be built around a single Disney Franchise, i.e., a specific narrative property (such as Aladdin, Hercules, Encanto, Zootopia, etc.).

All the cards in the deck – characters, songs, items, actions, and locations – must belong exclusively to that Franchise.

For example, a deck inspired by Robin Hood could include:

Robin Hood – Unrivaled Archer

Robin Hood – Capable Fighter

Robin Hood – Daydreamer

No more mixing different worlds: in VHS, you play inside the stories.

✅ How do you know which Franchise a card belongs to?

The distribution of cards by Franchise can be easily checked on the website Dreamborn.ink, which offers a clear and updated overview of the entire Lorcana collection.

✅ Copy limit

Each deck can contain a maximum of four cards from the Disney Lorcana Franchise (such as Fortisphere, Sail the Azurite Sea, etc.), freely distributed:

  • 4 copies of the same card
  • 2+2
  • 3+1
  • Or 4 different cards in single copy

This rule adds variety and balance, encouraging you to thoroughly explore everything a Franchise has to offer.

Other specifics of the VHS format

  • All Franchises published up to Lorcana’s latest expansion are legal.
  • The set rotation does not apply: every card printed so far can be used, provided it fits the chosen Franchise.
  • Cards like Hiram Flaversham – Toymaker and Fortishpere, although not legal in Core Constructed, are perfectly playable in VHS.
  • The card Bucky – Squirrel Squeak Tutor is only valid in its “reworded” version at cost 3.

No proxies are allowed: the format aims to enhance the real collections of players and rediscover cards forgotten in binders.

The spirit of VHS: fun, immersion, community

The VHS format was born from a shared passion: the love for the Disney world and organized play.

Lore League created this format to give new life to overlooked cards, explore thematic synergies, and above all, to experience matches as real narratives.
Every VHS tournament is an opportunity to step into the shoes of your favorite heroes (or villains!) and bring to the table the adventures you loved as children – and that you continue to love today.

Store owners eager to organize VHS tournaments are encouraged to:

• Name their event “VHS Lore League.”

• Fully adhere to the deckbuilding rules without modifying them.

• Provide feedback and suggestions to make the format increasingly balanced and engaging.

VHS is not just a format: it’s a celebration of Disney stories through the strategic gameplay of Lorcana.

It’s a way to embrace creativity and give a voice to each and every Franchise with all its potential.

Prepare your decks, choose your story, and let the heroes, villains, and tales speak for themselves.

Lore League awaits you.
